Space Shuttle Endeavour Atmosphere: The Big Endeavour at the California Science Center

For the first time, the California Science Center is recreating the vertical launch position of the space shuttle Endeavour, complete with all the equipment that took the orbiter to space on 25 missions. Dubbed 'Mission 26: The Big Endeavour,' this ambitious project has never been attempted outside of NASA before.

According to Ken Phillips, curator of aerospace science at the California Science Center, the museum is essentially building a giant spaceship, just like NASA did, but without any of their resources. This endeavor (pun intended) has been years in the making - Phillips has been imagining this project for over 33 years, even before he joined the California Science Center and while the Endeavour was still actively engaged in missions.

The California Science Center is recreating the Endeavour's vertical launch position to learn more about its final journey home. The museum will double its exhibit space at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, featuring over 100 authentic artifacts from the shuttle program. Once construction is complete, the Endeavour will be displayed in its 'ready to launch' position in what will be the world's only authentic space shuttle stack.
